Tagar/ Tagara/ Tagar-ganthoda/ Indian Valerian [Botanical Name: Valeriana wallichii] is a plant indigenous to the temperate Himalayas, Khasia hills, Found in Kashmir & Bhutan at a altitude of 3000 mts. Tagara is said to be native to Europe and parts of Asia but also grows in North America. Medicine is made from the root. In Ayurveda, the ancient sage Charak says Indian Valerian roots benefits include in combating neurological, psychological and digestive disorders. Ayurveda mentions Tagara is hot in potency, snigdha or unctuous in nature and helps to pacify Vitiated Vatta, Pitta & Kapha. As per traditional Ayurvedic texts, Tagara helps to improve eye functions and pain reducing action. Tagara helps to calm the mind, strengthens the nervous system and improve sleep quality in insomnia.
